[Press release from Cleveland Cinemas.]
The
Capitol Theatre (1390 W. 65th St., Cleveland) will present two
classic films by director Robert Altman starting Friday, September 11th
in honor of their anniversaries. Oscar-winner NASHVILLE will be back on the big screen for its 40th
and POPEYE returns for its 35th.
With a cast of 24 characters
whose lives are intertwined through multiple storylines rather than a single plotline, NASHVILLE was unlike any
other film when it was released in the summer of 1975. Set in an election year
as a third party candidate is organizing musical talent for a rally, NASHVILLE’s themes of celebrity culture
and politics are as timely today as they were when the film was originally
released.
Nominated for five Academy
Awards including Best Picture, Director and two Best Supporting Actress nods
(Lily Tomlin and Ronee Blakely) the film won Best Original Song for Keith
Carradine’s “I’m Easy.” NASHVILLE is
now ranked as one of the top 100 films of all time by the American Film
Institute.
POPEYE stars
the late Robin Williams as the spinach-powered sailor in this live-action
family comedy based on the classic comic strip. The film co-stars the perfectly
cast Shelley Duvall as Popeye’s girlfriend Olive Oyl (a role she seems almost
genetically designed to play). POPEYE
was a complete departure for the maverick filmmaker, marking his only family
film and his first attempt at truly broad comedy. The film was one of the
biggest hits of 1980 and has developed a cult following over the years.
NASHVILLE
and POPEYE will be showing in the historic
main auditorium of the Capitol Theatre from new digital prints from Paramount
Pictures. NASHVILLE will play daily
at 3:45 PM and 7:00 PM from September 11th - 17th. POPEYE
will play daily at 1:00 PM from September 11th – 17th
with an added late show at 10:15 PM on September 11th and 12th.
Tickets for the evening shows are $9.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, $8.50
for students. Matinee tickets are $6.75 for adults Friday – Sunday and $6.00
Monday – Thursday. All seats on Monday are $6. A special double-feature
discount admission of $6.50 is available for either film when a regular priced
admission is purchased for the other. Tickets are available at the box office
or online at clevelandcinemas.com.
NASHVILLE is
rated R for language, nudity and adult situations. It stars Lily Tomlin, Ronee
Blakley, Karen Black, Henry Gibson, Keith Carradine.
POPEYE is
rated PG for comic action and mild language. It stars Robin Williams, Shelley
Duvall, Paul Dooley, Paul L. Smith.
